“Loving God and loving our neighbour” form part of the ethos at London Christian. We seek to reflect God’s love in a variety of ways, locally and globally.
Terry Fox School RunStudents and staff have an opportunity to participate in our school’s Terry Fox School Run in late September. Each participant is required to raise a minimum of $40.00 from sponsors. All funds raised through this event go to support the cost of researching cures for cancer. Participants run/walk a distance of approximately 10 km on the Pottersburg bike/walking path along the south branch of the Thames river. Our school’s run is planned and organized by a committee of students and staff.
Operation SCROOGE (Student Christmas Rush for Oodles and Oodles of Goodies)London’s Youth for Christ organization annually invites London’s high schools to participate in this campaign. LDCSS students and staff canvass east London neighbourhoods to collect canned goods which are used by the Salvation Army to fill food hampers for the needy during the Christmas season. Our school’s participation is organized by a committee of students and staff.
SUD ACADEMYSud Academy is a school in Nairobi, Kenya. Many of its students are Sudanese children and young people who are refugees because of the civil war in Sudan. Once a month, LDCSS students and staff are invited to make a donation to contribute to the financial support of this school. Funds are channeled through a London organization, Canadian Aid for Southern Sudan (CASS). Our students are also invited to exchange letters with students from Sud Academy.
Volunteering at the ARK AID MISSIONOnce a month a group of students and staff volunteer an evening of their time to help out at the Ark Aid Mission in London’s downtown. This may consist of helping to serve a meal and cleaning up afterwards and/or spending time with those who come to the mission.
Bag Folding for the London District Food BankSince 1988, LDCSS students and staff have assisted the London District Food Bank with preparations for their Spring Food Drive. This consists of spending an hour and a half folding 85,000 paper grocery bags to facilitate their insertion in the London Free Press for distribution throughout London.
Donating blood to Canadian Blood ServicesOn four occasions during our school year, students who are 17 or older have an opportunity to sign up to donate blood. On a given date, they travel via the” blood bus” to donate their blood. These events are organized by a committee of students and a staff member.
ART for HIV/AIDS INTERNATIONALDuring the 2007 – 08 school year, 35 students participated in a collage making workshop conducted by a local London artist, Hendrikus Bervoets, from Art for HIV / AIDS INTERNATIONAL. LDCSS was twinned with a South African high school, where a similar workshop was conducted. The best collages from both schools were selected for printing (limited edition prints). These are for sale at the ART for HIV/AIDS INTERNATIONAL GALLERY at 242 Dundas St (downstairs) in downtown London (opposite Central Library). The proceeds go to funding Art for HIV / AIDS International projects which seek to assist children and women who are victims of HIV / AIDS in sub – Saharan Africa. This project was sponsored by Trojan Technologies of London.
Amnesty International’s “WRITE FOR RIGHTS” Campaign
Each winter, a number of LDCSS students and staff participate in this campaign. They write letters to government officials in other countries to protest human rights violations of particular political prisoners. The students advocate on their behalf. Our school’s participation is organized by a committee of students and a staff member.
