The English courses at LDCSS recognize that the world in its entirety - including human culture and institutions – belongs to God and that humans are therefore fundamentally religious creatures. Through the study of literature, students will become aware of representative works and various genres; come to terms with some of the great ideas and issues of human history and culture; become aware of the craftsmanship of the writer in giving aesthetic embodiment to ideas and issues in an imaginative way; and realize that writers depict life from their view of created reality.
Through the study of composition, students appreciate language as a gift from God; realize that communication (oral and written) is one of the greatest gifts God has given to human beings and that strengthening this skill will increase their ability to communicate effectively in all areas of the curriculum as well as in life; and understand the role of language in communication, and the various purposes for which it is used and misused.
Through the study of media, students will develop an appreciation and aesthetic understanding of the media; and the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to interpret the ways the media actively construct reality. Students will also develop their research and critical skills in order to make informed and discriminating judgments about ideas transmitted through the various media.
